For most of us, shoulder pain comes as a result of taut shoulder muscles caused by stress, poor posture or ‘sleeping funny’, and it is usually nipped in the bud with the help of muscle relaxants, pain killers and gentle exercise. On the other hand, we understand that chronic shoulder pain is extremely difficult to live with, since it restricts both mobility and the ability to relax properly when sitting or sleeping. To make matters worse, shoulder pain is often accompanied by neck pain.

Common Conditions Causing Chronic Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is comprised of a ball and socket joint, providing fluid movement. This mobility is a blessing, however the area tends to get easily injured due to wear and tear. Additionally, not all severe shoulder pain comes from joint issues – it can also be the result of problems in other areas such as the neck and upper back.

These are some common conditions which result in patients suffering chronic shoulder pain:

  • Arthritis – the joint becomes inflamed and therefore painful.
  • Frozen Shoulder – a thickening, swelling and tightening of the flexible tissue that surrounds your shoulder joint, leaving less space for your upper arm bone in the shoulder joint so that movement becomes stiff and painful.
  • Sub Acromial Impingement – also called ‘swimmer’s shoulder’ or ‘thrower’s shoulder’, pain is caused when the tendons of the rotator cuff muscles become irritated and inflamed.
