Specialist Neck Pain Treatment
A stiff upper lip is not the answer for chronic neck pain – let Hertfordshire Pain Consultants give you real relief for your individual condition.
While most of us have experienced neck pain for short periods of time due to sports injury, ‘sleeping funny’ or poor posture, we understand that chronic neck pain puts sufferers in the position of struggling to do ordinary everyday activities and can be highly stressful to cope with. In some cases it prevents people from even being able to turn their head, making actions like driving hazardous if not impossible.
Common Conditions Causing Chronic Neck Pain
The medical term for your neck is the cervical spine – this area is key since it houses the spinal cord which sends messages from the brain to control your body. The neck area includes the bones and joints of the cervical spine, the discs that separate the cervical vertebrae (to absorb shock as you move) plus muscles and ligaments. Typically, severe neck pain can be caused by degeneration of one or more of these areas, a spasm of the neck muscles or inflammation of the neck joints.
These are some common conditions which result in patients suffering chronic neck pain:
- Degenerative Disc Disease – when a spinal disc is damaged, it presses painfully on the surrounding nerves.
- Osteoarthritis (Facet Joint Arthritis) – the joint between two vertebrae in your spine becomes swollen and painful.
- Pinched Nerve (Cervical Radiculopathy) – a nerve root leaving the cervical spine on its way down your arm becomes squashed or pinched, causing loss of sensation and pain.
- Whiplash – the neck is injured by a sudden movement of the head, usually a common result of a car accident.
